9/15/64, Cape Kennedy: “President L.B. Johnson has the complexities of a space capsule shown to him by astronaught (sic) Wally Schirra during President’s quick visit to the Kennedy Space Center. Inside capsule are astronaughts Gus Grissom and John Young.”

“And see, Gus is throwing switches right now! Ooh, are you sure that was the right one, Gus? I don’t think it was.”

Young: Fuckin’ A. Ah hate this media stuff, Gus.
Grissom: Dammit, that’s my line, John. We’ve really been hanging out at gangster clubs too much.
Gemini Appreciation Post.

One thing I keep hearing from everyone is that Gemini doesn’t get any love. Which is true.

So let’s have a Gemini appreciation post. Reblog with anything Gemini-related, like:

-Your favorite mission

-Favorite moments

-Mission you’d most like to fly

-Mission you’d least like to fly

-Etc.

Favorite mission: Um, Gemini 4, because ED AND JIM. Those guys were really having a party in space!

Favorite moments: Ed White’s general banter during his space walk; Gemini 6 & 7 rendezvous

Mission I’d most like to fly: Gemini 3, because GUS AND JOHN, plus, they have lots of (unauthorized) food

Mission I’d least like to fly: Gemini 8 (for obvious reasons) and 7, for the stank

Favorite Gemini astronaut: Gosh, this is hard. Can’t I admire them all? I have to say Gus Grissom, because Gemini was the Gusmobile. Although Ed White is a close second for his heroics and great attitude.

“Astronaut John Young discusses (1965’s) Gemini spaceflights with Edward White, Thomas Stafford, and James McDivitt at Cape Kennedy, Florida.”
I don’t know exactly what they’re talking about, but it seems to involve a lot of judging.

They all just found out what John is naming his book.

Young: Ah am callin’ it Forever Young. What do y’all think?
White: I am judging you right now.
McDivitt: I am judging you so damn hard right now.
Stafford: Oh yeah? Really? Because, Jim, I am judging you, very hard, right now with my eyeballs.
Young: Whutever. Ah liked the title. It was better than mah other choice: Damn, That’s Sexy: The Life of America’s Handsomest Gemini Astronaut.
McDivitt: …

Wow, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a picture of the stars from space.
It’s like a thing we don’t realise from most of the pictures, but when the astronauts are up there, they can see the stars, they just don’t show up on film if there’s something bright in the shot.

And they don’t twinkle! No atmosphere to get in the way.

Ok, I am dumb and didn’t read the description. Those aren’t stars, they’re drops of astronaut pee.

Oh goodness. Stafford and Schirra pee. They took a photo of it? LOLZ

This 1960s space-capsule-shaped bottle from Canada Dry would appear to be an anomalous tie-in product designed to capitalize on popular interest in space travel at the time…According to the copy at the bottom of the bottle Canada Dry seems to had an arrangement with Nasa to supply drinking water: “for astronauts and space systems in flight.” (via Astronaut Water Bottles | Box Vox)

Thank God there was no Gemini 7 water. That would taste kinda…distinctive

An interesting shot from the 1962-63 time frame that was taken in St. Louis at the McDonnell plant. Television crews from KMOX in St. Louis appear to be looking at a Mercury spacecraft, and a Gemini mock-up is in the background. (via Wall Photos)

This is only a few miles from my house. Sometimes it amazes me that something so cool happened in the same town where Axl Rose sparked a riot.

I want an old timey TV camera.

I love the ad for the futuristic “Gemini” program. Yeah, that’s way too farfetched.
I also love the poster of the MR-1 launch failure. That was the one where the escape tower blew off and everybody was super-embarrassed. Why did they make a poster of that and hang it in the workplace? For the lulz? For shaming purposes?

LOL I SAW THAT TOO
“MR-1: LET’S REMEMBER IT FOR THE LULZ”
I wish I had been a poster copy editor/editorial assistant for NASA in 1962.
Engineering fields really love to think about their failures in depth, when I worked in nuclear power it was similar. We had some vaguely disturbing x-ray posters around of peoples’ compound fractures and stuff like that. “THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU HERP TO THE DERP”

That awkward moment when you realize that your sibling is far more advanced than you.

omg i doodled the cutest thing in art history today… i had a little piece if paper folded in four sections and first i did a mercury capsule, a gemini capsule, the lunar lander, and then the space shuttle… i need to scan it in

When Mercury realized its sibling wasn’t a hatchback = a sad moment :(

gem 3 and 4 shout outs

Yeah! Without Gemini, Apollo would have not been possible. Which is why I have a huge soft spot for the Gemini Program. :)
