10/25/65: The Gemini 6 backup crew, Gus Grissom and John Young, greet the prime crew members Wally Schirra and Tom Stafford with “Out of Service” signs shortly before launch. Schirra and Stafford had just arrived in the White Room, where they would be strapped into their spacecraft.  GT-6 was scheduled to perform the first-ever docking in space, with the Agena Target Vehicle.
However, as the caption points out, “The gag backfired a few minutes later, however, when the Atlas-Agena target vehicle was lost after blastoff, forcing the cancellation of the mission.”
As you can imagine, this was slightly awkward. But NASA came up with a new plan: The mission would be renamed GT-6A, and its new goal would be to rendezvous, and not dock, with the Gemini 7 spacecraft in December. And the rest is history.
