50 years ago today, Wally “Skyray” Schirra spent nine hours in orbit making sure his hair was perfect upon his return from space. He was also the first “unimpressed astronaut” when asked to describe the view:  ”might as well be in an airplane at 40- to 50-thousand feet altitude.”

On a personal note, when my dad was having lunch with him, Wally remarked that a young reporter had asked him a question using the word “capsule”. Wally responded with something along the lines of “Young man, we did not fly in pills.”
